14 February

The government decides to pay compensation for the Red prisoners of war who were incarcerated in prison camps or prisons during the civil war of 1918.

1 April

A law on four weeks’ annual leave comes into force in Finland.

16 May

Finland signs a convention of economic cooperation with the socialist economies. Finland becomes the first western party to the convention.

16 November

With 141 votes for and 36 against, the parliament approves a free trade agreement between Finland and the European Economic Community.
