6 April

Finland and the Soviet Union sign an agreement on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance (the YYA Treaty).

1–2 July

Parliamentary elections are held. Communists lose 11 seats and the party’s role in domestic politics starts to deteriorate.

1 October

The Child Benefit Act enters into force. Child benefits are paid for every child under 16 years of age. There are over 1.1 million beneficiaries.
