1 August

Alexander II, Grand Duke of Finland, signs a document improving the status of the Finnish language in the state administration.

14 August

Finland’s first teacher training institute starts in Jyväskylä. Its language of instruction is Finnish. The first teachers graduate in 1866.

15 September

Regular parliamentary activities are launched in Finland. Beginning from 1863, the parliament (Diet of Finland) convenes every 3 to 5 years.
