A New Year Speech by Urho Kekkonen, the President of the Republic, marks the beginning of regular television transmissions of the Finnish Broadcasting Company. Programmes are transmitted for an hour each day. No programmes are transmitted in summer.

4 December

Pressure from the Soviet Union forces the government led by K-A. Fagerholm to resign.
