The 100th anniversary of V. I. Lenin’s birth is celebrated in Finland. President Urho Kekkonen points out that the recognition of Finland’s independence was in line with Lenin’s consistent nationality policy.

1 June

An abortion law enters into force which allows abortion on social grounds.

9 June

Imatran Voima and Soviet Teknopromexport sign an agreement in Moscow for a nuclear power plant to be built in Finland.

1 July

An amendment of the Penal Code makes racial discrimination a punishable act in Finland.

21 August

Finland’s first rock festival, Ruisrock, starts in Ruissalo, Turku. The three-day festival attracts 50,000 visitors.
