A law is passed allowing people to change from the Evangelical Lutheran Church to a Protestant religious community. Baptists and Methodists make use of the opportunity.

The first issue of the liberal Finnish-language Päivälehti is published. The newspaper was the predecessor of Helsingin Sanomat, and it was closed down in 1904 during the Russification period.
