Svenska Litteratursällskapet i Finland is founded to honour the life and memory of the poet J. L. Runeberg.

The Finnish Literature Society (SKS) celebrates the 50th anniversary of the publication of the first version of The Kalevala. The Kalevala is celebrated throughout the year across the country.

6 May

The statue of J. L. Runeberg is unveiled in the Esplanade Park in Helsinki in the presence of about 20,000 people. The statue was sculpted by the poet’s son Walter.
