The Tobacco Act enters into force. Tobacco ads are banned, and tobacco products are no longer sold to children under the age of 16. Smoking is also restricted.

10 July

An Aeroflot Tupolev aircraft, hijacked by two Soviet men on a domestic flight in the USSR, lands in Helsinki. The hijackers release some of the passengers and some manage to escape. The hijackers surrender to the Finnish authorities on 12 July. They are returned to the Soviet Union on 13 July.
